The AMC Mohican Outdoor Center Teen Base Camp Trail Crew is designed for youth aged 14-17 to experience challenging and rewarding trail stewardship work in the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area in New Jersey. These week-long Teen Trail Crews are led by qualified AMC Trail Crew Leaders working in partnership with the National Park Service.
The program begins on Sunday afternoon with an orientation and dinner at AMC's Mohican Outdoor Center. Each weekday morning after breakfast, the crew will hike to a nearby trail to work on trail reconstruction and maintenance projects. The projects may involve clearing brush to better define the trail, cleaning drainage to help with erosion problems, installing water bars and bog bridges, painting blazes, and other crucial conservation tasks. Please remember that while we work within the abilities and comfort of the group, the nature of hiking and the work is strenuous and demanding, and we will be out rain or shine.
It is certainly not all work though. Your crew will take plenty of time to play cards, toss Frisbee, take hikes and maybe even take a swim in the pond. The food is abundant and delicious; crew members all get their turn cooking quesadillas, pasta feasts, and other backcountry delicacies. All of the food for the week is included in the program cost, as are tents, other shared camping equipment, and leadership from two AMC Crew Leaders with ample Outdoor and Youth Leadership experience.
The crew will live at AMC's Mohican Outdoor Center Campsites, which are situated close to the main lodge along the wooded edge of a large field. Campsites include tent sites, fire ring, and picnic tables. The crew will have access to flush toilets, showers, and dish washing facilities.
