Green Features
Conserving our Natural Resources and Reducing our Carbon Footprint

Site Work
Le Spa Forêt site was carefully staked to ensure minimal disturbance. During excavation only the building footprint and a 15-20 foot perimeter was disturbed. Only 3 trees and some brush were removed from the site. Shrubs, trees and vegetation native to NEPA have been re-planted once the building was completed.

Engineered Lumber
Huber’s ZIP system was used for the exterior sheathing. By using this sheathing less mature trees will be cut down to provide lumber for this PAGreenHouse since the ZIP system can be made from smaller trees or brush. Additionally, the ZIP system is mold resistant which helps ensure healthier indoor air quality.

Trusses
Instead of stick framing the roof, onsite trusses were used for Le Spa Forêt. Since trusses are a factory engineered solution, the typical onsite waste due to cutting of material for the roof was virtually eliminated.

Windows
Le Spa Forêt and the spa suites have energy-efficient windows that employ advanced technologies, such as protective coatings (Low-E) and improved frames, to help keep heat in during winter and out during summer. These windows also block damaging ultraviolet sunlight that can discolor carpets and furnishings.

Plumbing Fixtures
Each of the faucets in Le Spa Forêt will hold the Environmental Protection Agency’s Water Sense label. Every faucet that holds this label uses at least 20% less water than the norm. The average faucet in Le Spa Forêt will use only 1.5 gallons of water per minute. This helps conserve water, our most valuable natural resource.

Paint
Le Spa Forêt and the spa suites were painted with low/no VOC paints throughout. By nearly eliminating VOC’s emitted from paints, indoor air quality is improved. Additionally, it helps protect our environment.

Carpets
Carpets installed in all our spa suites and common areas of the Le Spa Forêt are made from 100% recycled products.

Lighting
Light fixtures that accommodate compact fluorescent lights (CFL’s) will be used throughout Le Spa Forêt. CFL’s lest much longer than traditional incandescent bulbs and use approximately 20% less electricity.

Salt Water Pool and Hot Tub
The salt water system uses UV technology to break down simple table salt into sodium and chloride to naturally chlorinate the water. Not only is this safer for the environment, but it is also gentler on the skin, eyes, and the air you breathe.

BeeKind, Bath Amenities
The BeeKind Collection paper bottle is a 59% reduction in packaging material by weight and a 92% reduction in waste space compared to rigid plastic bottles. With honey and certified organic extracts of red clover, calendula, lemongrass and chamomile, BeeKind is as soothing as it is stylish. A portion of the net profits of this product supports honey bee and sustainable pollination research.

Our Builder, Outlook Construction

Locally or Family-Owned Business Notes

While most of the world was struggling to survive in the midst of the Great Depression of the1930’s, mining magnate Joseph Hirshhorn found himself awash in money. He decided to build a manor house to spend summers and the Christmas Holidays with his friends and family. To this end, he brought some 165 German and Italian craftsmen and artisans to 500 acres on Huckleberry Mountain in the heart of the Poconos of Pennsylvania to construct his “summer retreat.”

Using natural lumber and fieldstone from local quarries, the men spent the years 1935 to 1937 building Hirshhorn’s stone chateau with care and distinction. The roof is made of imported Spanish slate, the windows are all leaded glass and much of the interior wood is pecky cypress and cedar. The manor has an elegant Romanesque arched entrance way and massive stone fireplaces in the Great Room, now used as the Dining Room.

Upon its completion, Hirshhorn filled the home with part of his vast art collection. Many of the artisans and craftsmen settled in the area and their descendants continue to live here. Hirshhorn (who eventually donated much of his collection to the Smithsonian) eventually sold his home to Samuel H. Kress.

The Manor was sold to the Ron and Mary Logan in 1990, and it is still operated by the Logan family - Genevieve (Logan) and William Reese, and Bridget (Logan) Weber.
